Apprenticing as an optician at a private ophthalmologist?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I've been fascinated by the optical industry, and I've decided to persue a part-time career as an optician to pay for my college education(well, at least until I get into optometry or medical school). I know one way to get enough experience to pass the ABO NOCE exam is by apprenticing to an optician, so I've decided to ask my ophthalmologist's optician (my ophthalmologist and optometrist have their own optical store on premise) if I can apprentice to her. They said to bring in my resume when I see them for my eye exam and contact lens fitting at the end of the month. I have completed the general education reqs for a BS degree

Is this a good way of getting experience? What's the average hourly wage for an apprentice optician?

Thanks,

Doug

I started my career as a lab technician and then became an apprentice. I was able to pass my boards on the first try after 3 years of being an apprentice.

Now I own my own store and the Doctor works for me!
